Jess Parker
Victoria songwriter Jess Parker has released four solo albums and performed with the likes of Cedric Burnside (USA), CW Stoneking, and Tex Perkins to name a few - gaining recognition as an incredible songwriter, finger-picker and storyteller in the worlds of country, folk, country blues, minor-key sass, and Western Swing music.
Jess is an old soul in a modern world, creating a compelling and authentic sound built around classic and contemporary themes and draped in a voice that perfectly blends soul and twang. That was evident on their most recent single 'Hand In The Grain', their first new music since the single 'Wholesome Prison Blues' in 2023.
'Hand In The Grain' dances from the speakers on the back of Jess's sublime and melodic, finger-picked acoustic guitar. The song finds them paying loving tribute to their mother, Mae Parker. "'Hand In The Grain' is an tender ode to my mum, who tirelessly raised us kids as a single parent - it's a nod to women who hold the fort down, who raise us up to be strong, and who are the glue of our communities."
On their latest single 'Lady From Doreen', which premiered with Sunburnt Country Music, Jess turns their attention to a loved one, with a song that details the beautiful, simple moments of intimacy and desire in absentia. Their voice and instrument convey the ache and passion with a heady sway and heartfelt conviction.
"'Lady from Doreen' is a lonesome yearning lament written for the woman I love," says Jess. "It's about the limerence and longing you feel when a lover leaves a room, the heady absence that hangs in the air. It's a nod to all the sapphic folk predecessors and storytellers before me, and my attempt to keep the poetic fire burning - it's for her."
Jess has also just released their previous album, Wholesome Prison Blues, on vinyl and streaming services for the first time. Featuring the well-received singles 'Help Myself' and the title-track, the Jess Parker Band album is a true blueprint of fevered honky-tonk, Tex-Mex, barn-stomping, country-blues joy!
"It is such a joy to finally be releasing this album," enthuses Jess. "We cut this thing three years ago straight to tape, in an old Castlemaine barn, in just five hours. It fell out like a fever and the whole band was cooking – all seven of us sweating over our instruments like a group exorcism. You can hear the urgency, it felt like we were playing like our lives were on the line - I've never been more proud of a record!"
